It seems to get old for me. It’s such a relative term anyway. Growing up, as we left the house (or did anything for that matter), my mom always told us to “be good.” What does that even mean really?

Even the “Lookout” magazine wants to highlight the importance of “being good” and how hard it is to just to be good all the time with their article, “Tired of Being Good.” Shawn McMullen even said that they wanted to emphasize goodness as a lifestyle.

Who defines what is good?

It’s funny when I think about how our society defines “good”. I am not sure that God (which is good without the extra “o”) would always fit into the category. Most people would not define asking for entire people groups to be wiped out “good”

Brittney and I have become huge fans of the BBC version of Robin Hood. We are in the third and final season and find ourselves taking our time, wanting to savor it all. Once again, another person that the church would most likely not define as “good.”

From time to time, I get tired of being good and I want to start doing the right thing. Maybe we have distorted this word into something that is more politically correct than it should be. Here is the problem: if we define good by the people around us we can get off base. When we define good by God (who is good) the lines curve a little differently. It means that sometimes the good guys are the ones in jail (Paul), or that the good guys are the ones causing the trouble (Jesus). Elijah was running from the law as the good guy. David, too. I am sure it will look different for all of us, like asking your boss not to use the Lord’s name in vain or letting the government know you’re paying too little on your homeowner’s tax. I am not sure what it would look like in your life, but we must remember, “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8

Facts: The name of March comes from ancient Rome, when March was the first month of the year and named Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war. In Rome, where the climate is Mediterranean, March is the first month of spring, a logical point for the beginning of the year as well as the start of the military campaign season. January became the first month of the calendar year either under King Numa Pompilius (circa 713 BCE) or under the Decemvirs about 450 BCE (Roman writers differ).
The numbered year began on March 1 in Russia until the end of the fifteenth century. Great Britain and her colonies continued to use March 25 until 1752, which was when they ultimately adopted the Gregorian calendar.
